A Break in the Weather
Finally,
the 90-degree days are hopefully beyond us and more seasonable weather
is in store including cool evenings and some rain from time to time.
The trout fishing on the Manistee and Boardman continues
to be a terrestrial bite with the heat we have experienced. Hoppers,
ants and beetles continue to bring up some fish and with a fair number
of fish coming on nymphs bellow the surface. With
the cool down, look for the streamer fishing to get good again
especially after some rains to wash some food down and get fish out from
under a bank or log jam. Hatches have been very light with a few Tricos
in the morning, BWOs, Caddis and Light Cahills sporadically emerging.
The salmon fishing on local rivers like the Betsie and Manistee is
slower than normal for this time of year, especially after last year’s
cool summer which started things early. Still, there are some fish
moving through the lower rivers and the rain we received yesterday and
what’s forecast should not only add some color to a low, clear river,
but also bring more fish into the river and get the ones already in the
river out from all of the wood. Water temps at the river mouths are
still warmer than ideal so look for the salmon season to be a little
longer this year compared to the last two years.
Bass and bluegill fishing
on the small lakes is tapering off, but the gills have been getting
bigger when fishing the poppers or small streamers. The bass are eating
bigger poppers in and around weed beds but some days they are preferring
streamers (baitfish patterns) fished along drop offs. This warm summer
has been great for the warm water angler or those learning to fly fish.
Good Luck!
Ted
